How to Build A Cross Network Segment Testing Environment for Industrial Switches?

Cross segment testing environment refers to testing the network connectivity capabilities of programs or devices in different IP address ranges. Building such a testing environment can help developers achieve more comprehensive and realistic testing work, in order to improve the reliability and stability of Industrial Switches. To ensure that industrial switches can adapt to different IP environments at home, abroad, and across different regions of the country.

Steps for building a cross network segment testing environment for industrial switches

1. Prepare multiple network devices, including industrial switches, routers, and multiple hosts. These devices need to be able to connect to each other and form a network.

2. Set the IP address and subnet mask of each device so that each device is in a different network segment. For example, suppose we need to build two network segments A and B, set the IP address range of A to 192.168.1.1-192.168.1.255, and the subnet mask to 255.255.255.0; Set the IP address range of B to 192.168.2.1-192.168.2.255 and the subnet mask to 255.255.255.0.

3. Set up VLANs (virtual local area networks) and their corresponding ports on industrial switches. VLAN is a technology that groups network devices according to logical functions, typically used to isolate different network segments in cross segment testing environments. For example, we set ports 1-8 on the switch to VLAN A and ports 9-16 to VLAN B to achieve isolation between the A and B network segments.

4. Set up a routing table on the router to forward traffic between different network segments. For example, route the traffic of network segment A to the router port with gateway IP address 192.168.1.254; Route the traffic of network segment B to the router port with gateway IP address 192.168.2.254.

5. Set the correct IP address and gateway in each testing host to enable them to access other devices in the cross segment testing environment. For example, set the IP address of host A to 192.168.1.10 and the gateway address to 192.1 68.1.254; Set the IP address of host B to 192.168.2.10 and the gateway address to 192.168.2.254.

6. During the testing of industrial switches, use ping and other testing methods to test the connectivity between various hosts, and conduct other testing work. Optimize network configuration, troubleshoot, and achieve required functionality based on test results.

In short, building a cross network segment testing environment for industrial switches requires an understanding of network equipment and basic knowledge, and careful setup and testing work. Through correct operation and optimization, an efficient industrial switch testing environment and more reliable product functions can be achieved.
