Gigabit Industrial Switch VS 100M Industrial Switch

The switch is a very important device in the network connection, which is often used for bridging network lines. We are more familiar with the Ethernet switch, which forms a two-way transmission network through Ethernet. At present, with the continuous development of science and technology, the requirements for network transmission are getting higher and higher. At present, there are many kinds of Industrial Switches on the market. When we purchase industrial switches, their transmission rate is very critical. Gigabit industrial switch and 100M Ethernet switch are both industrial switches with relatively fast transmission rate. What's the difference between them?

What is a gigabit industrial switch?

The gigabit industrial switch can be said to be an upgraded version of the 100M industrial switch. Its transmission rate is ten times faster than the 100M industrial switch, and is designed to meet the high-speed requirements of Internet Service Providers (ISPs). The theoretical transmission rate of gigabit industrial switch can reach 1000Mbps, with backward compatibility (adaptive 10/100Mbps). Generally, the gigabit industrial switch has multiple RJ45 ports and SFP ports, and data transmission can be realized through network jumpers (such as CAT-5 network cables, CAT-6 network cables, etc.) or optical fiber jumpers and SFP optical modules.

What is a 100M industrial switch?

The100M industrial switch is called a fast Ethernet switch. It supports the 10/100BASE-T standard and the transmission rate can reach 100Mbit/s. It usually has multiple RJ45 ports and can be connected to PC, server, router and other devices through network jumpers. At present, most 100M industrial switches have several gigabit uplink ports, which can be cascaded with gigabit switches to achieve 1Gbps or even higher transmission rate.

Gigabit industrial switch

What is the difference between gigabit industrial switch and 100M industrial switch? In addition to the above-mentioned differences in transmission rates and port types, there are also differences in the following aspects:

1. Different concurrent operation requests

Compared with 100M industrial switch, gigabit industrial switch can support more concurrent operation requests; 100M industrial switch can support fewer concurrent operation requests than gigabit industrial switch.

2. The two functions are different

Generally speaking, gigabit switches have network management functions and more flexible network deployment, allowing network administrators to provide security and QoS (quality of service) control policies for specific applications. They have high security. Fast Ethernet switches do not carry these advanced functions.

3. The two power supply standards are different

In the previous PoE standard, PoE technology can provide 12.94W power for wireless access points or other IP devices, but it can no longer meet the power requirements of today's new devices. At present, the latest gigabit industrial switch supports the enhanced PoE+standard, with the maximum power up to 30W, while the 100M industrial switch does not adopt the latest power standard, so the power of the gigabit industrial switch is higher than that of the 100M industrial switch.

4. Their power consumption is different

Compared with 100M industrial switch, gigabit industrial switch can not only provide higher bandwidth and powerful management functions, but also save energy. Its power consumption is low. Enterprises can reduce power consumption through gigabit industrial switch during network deployment.

5. The two costs are different

Statistics show that the price of gigabit switches is four times higher than that of 100M industrial switches. The price difference between the two is large, which is an important factor affecting network engineering decision-making.

Now, the cost of gigabit industrial switch is gradually declining, and even ordinary users can afford its price. How to choose between gigabit industrial switch and 100M industrial switch? We can follow the following principles:

If it is just a simple network environment and the transmission rate requirement is not high, the use of gigabit industrial switch may not be able to give full play to its advantages. Considering the cost, you can choose 100M industrial switch.

If there is a high requirement for the network environment, such as large-scale online games and server hosting, it is more appropriate to choose gigabit industrial switches, because gigabit industrial switches have obvious advantages in speed and performance. In addition, as a medium and large enterprise that has multiple users accessing the same network equipment or needs to add PoE+power supply equipment, considering the future network growth trend, it is more efficient to choose gigabit industrial switching opportunities, and it is more convenient to upgrade the network, which can meet different network cabling requirements.
